Sam Raff - Rises to
the Occasion
By Lynda
Wheeler, KARSP Community Service
Information
provided by Wilma Jean Johnson and
Seward County Association of Retired School
Personnel.
Sam
Raff, a member of the Seward County Association of
Retired School Personnel, and a graduate from
Panhandle Oklahoma State University in Goodwell,
Oklahoma, doesn’t just give lip service to the
concept of giving back to the community he came
from. For nine months of every school year Sam and a
team of other volunteers from Liberal, cook. They
then take the meal to the Bible Chair in Goodwell to
share good food and Christian fellowship. As many as
150 students and faculty come to the Bible Chair the
third Thursday of each month to find familiar
friendly faces, make new friends, and eat the
delightful treats made for them by Sam and his
fellow volunteers. “Encouraging young people to keep
their faith strong while away from home,” is
something Sam finds very worthwhile and rewarding.
Every summer Camp Billy Joe, a Christian youth camp
by Black Mesa State Park near Kenton, Oklahoma, gets
the benefit of Sam’s cooking as well. At camp, Sam
cooks three meals a day plus an afternoon snack for
up to 150 campers. Sam is responsible for getting up
and making the yeast rolls so they will rise in time
for lunch. Some of the campers eat better at Camp
Billy Joe than they do at home. Sam says the reward
for these long and sometimes hot hours in the
kitchen is the ‘Thank You’s’ he gets from the young
people.
SCARSP is pleased to show their pride in Sam Raff –
a valued volunteer who rises to the occasion and
shares his passion for cooking and witnessing.
