National AARP Annual Chapter and Retired Educators
Association Unit Community Service Award

WOW! KARSP members are truly AMAZING & CARING
people. Our units reported 468,051 hours of
volunteer service this year. 92,825 of those hours
going directly to youth. That represents an
astounding $9,131,674.00 savings to the State of
Kansas because of our volunteering. Way to go
KARSP-ians! We plan to schedule a time to present
facsimile checks to the governor later this year.
Not only did we give time – we gave money in the
form of scholarships to dozens of students studying
education. In excess of $20,000!
The Outstanding Unit Award this year was again
awarded to Chanute Area Retired School Personnel for
the highest - per members capable of volunteering -
ratio of hours.
This year’s Meadowlark Awards went to: Liselotte
Serviss of McPherson, Carrol Hess of Manhattan,
Carolyn Langrebe of Douglas Co., Delores & Lester
Goyen of Pratt, Mary Lou Doris of Southwest Area,
and Robert Roberts of Southeast Kansas.
The Sunflower Awards went to: Bill & Aloha Preston
of Emporia, Phyllis & Alfred Weyerts of Manhattan,
Carol Oukrup of Manhattan, Loretta Gantenbein of
Douglas Co., Roger Frazer of Leavenworth, Terry
Eaton of Arkansas City, and Tom & Carol Musick of
Butler Co.
This year the National AARP 2008 Annual Community
Service Award goes to four of our members. Ron
Gardner & Ernie Claudel of Olathe, Pat Notestine of
Manhattan, Lee & Sharon Sharpe of Junction City.
NRTA With Our Youth Awards went to Olathe’s Senior
Serving Schools project, Edie Jorns of Manhattan,
and Carolyn Kuhn of Emporia.
The HUGE THANK YOU to units that reported their
participation in Collections for Kansas, KARSP’s
Remembrance Day/AARP Day of Service, NRTA With Our
Youth!, or KARSP’s Cookie Tray Project.
