Harold Schmidt – A Stitch in Time Saves Old Jeans
By Lynda
Wheeler, KARSP Community Service
Harold
Schmidt, retired 7th and 8th grade teacher turned
principal, and long-time treasured member of Harvey
County Area Retired School Personnel unit,
discovered a talent for a unique hobby. Using his
seamstress wife’s sewing machines, Harold taught
himself to sew.
After finding out he enjoyed sewing he began making
blankets for seniors and his grandchildren. Harold
heard about some old jeans that were going to be
thrown away. He said, “Give them to me and I will
use them!” Harold made good on that promise and has
turned out picnic tablecloth treasures ever since.
One of the practical aspects of these delightful
denim tablecloths is the jeans’ pockets placement.
He positions the pockets along the sides so they can
be used for napkins and utensils. Some of these gems
go to his family but he donates the rest to HCARSP
for their scholarship fundraiser, where they are
sought after and popular items.
Besides having cared for his health impaired wife
Hazel, being on the board for HCARSP, making the
tablecloths, making lap robes for seniors in care
facilities, Harold has kept himself busy by singing
in a men’s chorus and quartet that entertains at
nursing homes in the area.
Harvey County is fortunate to have this very active
91 year old valued volunteer among its members.
Thank you Harold Schmidt for all you do!
