Terry Eaton, the Forever Teacher
by Lynda Wheeler, KARSP Community Service.
Information provided by Shirley Morrison of Arkansas
City KARSP unit.
After
years of teaching math in middle school, followed by
a stint at Cowley College’s GED program, Terry Eaton
has taken on the moniker of local historian and
volunteer extraordinaire.
Terry serves on the
Cherokee Strip Museum Board developing programs,
helping teachers make the most of the museum, and
conducting tours for students and visitors. Helping
teachers comes naturally to Terry. The tennis coach
in Ark City’s middle school can attest to her giving
nature. She taught his history classes for two
weeks without pay so he could take his team to
scheduled matches.
Along with taking
care of her mother-in-law before her death, visiting
nursing home residents, watching after her 96 year
old mother, organizing and publishing a pictorial
history of the high school with a complete directory
of graduates, Terry serves on the Literacy Council
teaching reading to community members. Terry is a
member of the Music and Drama Club, Delta Kappa
Gamma, PEO, Central Christian Church, District
Women’s Fellowship, and the Ark City KARSP unit.
She is a vital part of these and other organizations
in the Ark City community.
Terry has been
recognized for her volunteerism by the Salvation
Army with their Harry Long award for continued
volunteer service, the Corner Bank Award for
community service, and received the KARSP sunflower
Award in 2007. It is clear to see why Shirley
Morrison said, “There isn’t a selfish bone in
Terry’s body…and I can say that she is a FOREVER
TEACHER.”
