Elinor Wiley Haas, a member of the Dickinson County Retired School Personnel and KARSP, has been honored with a national volunteer award.  On December 4th in College Park, Maryland, Elinor was awarded the 2008 prestigious Weidman Outstanding Volunteer Service Award from the National Archives and Records Administration.  This award to be given annually, was begun last year by the National Archives to honor a volunteer who made a significant difference in furthering National Archives interests.  She began volunteering at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in 1990 and has volunteered approximately 9,000 hours to the library.

Elinor graduated from Enterprise High School and Kansas Wesleyan University and was an English teacher at Abilene High School for 37 years.  She is a member of First United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, Dickinson County Historical Society, Dickinson County Arts Council, and the Friends of Minori, Japan.  She serves on the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Dickinson County and the building committee for the new Abilene Library, where she is in charge of the used book store.  She is also a volunteer with the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad and the tourism group in Abilene.

Elinor, who was recently widowed, was accompanied by Judy Burgess to Washington DC to receive the award.  Judy is vice-president of Dickinson County Retired School Personnel. Congratulations to Elinor for a job well done and for her invaluable service.
