Elinor Haas – Abilene
Volunteer
Elinor
Wiley Haas, a member of the Dickinson County Retired
School Personnel and KARSP, has been honored with a
national volunteer award. On December 4th
in College Park, Maryland, Elinor was awarded the
2008 prestigious Weidman Outstanding Volunteer
Service Award from the National Archives and Records
Administration. This award to be given annually,
was begun last year by the National Archives to
honor a volunteer who made a significant difference
in furthering National Archives interests. She
began volunteering at the Eisenhower Presidential
Library in 1990 and has volunteered approximately
9,000 hours to the library.
Elinor graduated
from Enterprise High School and Kansas Wesleyan
University and was an English teacher at Abilene
High School for 37 years. She is a member of First
United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta
Sigma Phi, Dickinson County Historical Society,
Dickinson County Arts Council, and the Friends of
Minori, Japan. She serves on the Board of Directors
of the Community Foundation of Dickinson County and
the building committee for the new Abilene Library,
where she is in charge of the used book store. She
is also a volunteer with the Abilene and Smoky
Valley Railroad and the tourism group in Abilene.
Elinor, who was
recently widowed, was accompanied by Judy Burgess to
Washington DC to receive the award. Judy is
vice-president of Dickinson County Retired School
Personnel. Congratulations to Elinor for a job well
done and for her invaluable service.
