Belle Grimsley – Docent and Dancer
By Lynda Wheeler, KARSP Community Service. Information provided by Kathy O’Mara of Emporia Area Retired School Personnel.

Belle Grimsley grew up on a dairy farm in Allen County where she began her volunteer activities early with membership in Star 4-H Club. Her love for 4-H, the land, and cattle remains a part of her life. She enters pens of steers annually at the Flint Hills Beef Fest and in 2006 Belle received the 2006 Friend of the Agents Award for her work with the 4-H Centennial committee.

In her youth Belle was a reporter for her 4-H club. There she developed a fondness for writing and reporting which she now uses as a correspondent for The Emporia Gazette, reporting on activities in Americus where she and her husband of 50 years, Dale, now live.

Since retiring after a nearly 38 year career in education Belle has volunteered in a number of organizations. If you visit the Z-Bar Schoolhouse or the William Allen White Historical Site in Emporia you might find her executing her duties as a docent. Belle holds offices in the Americus Chamber of Commerce, the Extension Master Gardeners, an antique car club, church group, Lyon County Historical Society Board, The Flint Hills Antique Power Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Theta.

When asked why she is willing to help out in so many different arenas Belle stated, “I am always interested in new ideas and I want to do something to make a difference.” The truth of her comment can be seen in the variety of activities she is involved in. Whether it is at a local nursing home, organizing the yearly Americus Holiday Light Parade, Sesquicentennial festivities, fulfilling her duties as past President of the Emporia Area Retired School Personnel unit or using her musical talents performing a tap dancing routine in a local mall - you can see that Belle Grimsley seems to be one very busy volunteer.
