Adrian Arpel :
Tax Man

 Tax
time can be a confusing and frustrating experience
for people. Many seniors find it less frustrating
because of the AARP Tax-Aide Program and Adrian
Arpel. This program is staffed with IRS certified
volunteers and provides free tax counseling and
preparation services to low and middle income
taxpayers with special attention paid to people age
60 and older. Adrian has been Volunteer Coordinator
and Publicity Chair for Topeka’s program for nearly
all the years since his retirement from the Topeka
school system in 1988. Because of his efforts and
commitment the anxiety of preparing tax returns has
been diminished for literally hundreds of people.
Adrian’s volunteer efforts have not been limited to
Tax-Aide. In fact, his volunteer work began in
earnest, after he returned from the Navy in 1946,
with teaching ballroom and jitterbug dancing to
college students at The College of Emporia. During
the intervening years he has been the Grocery Van
Driver Coordinator as well as a driver for Topeka
Presbyterian Manor, Elder and Deacon in his church,
worked with Scouts, served on the Topeka Board of
Directors for Topeka Blood Bank – donating over 13
gallons of blood, given countless above and beyond
hours to the special education students in his care,
to name just a few of his volunteering activities.
Adrian and Kathryn, his wife of over 55 years, still
manage to find time for fun and family. Besides
square dancing with the Swinging Squares Square
Dance Club they go camping and spend time with their
8 grandchildren.
In summary Adrian says, “Anyone who doesn’t
volunteer misses – one wonderful aspect of being
alive – doing something for others and not expecting
anything in return. Similar to ‘love’ – the more you
give away the more you receive,” What would our
communities – our world – do without people like
Adrian and his wife? Thank you Adrian!
