Norma
Karhoff – Lyon County Area Senior Spelling Bee
By Lynda Wheeler,
KARSP Community Service
AARP/NRTA
Annual Chapter & REA Community Service Award for
2009 was given to Dr. Norma Karhoff
from Emporia Area Retired School Personnel. Norma
is being recognized for her work with the Lyon
County Senior Spelling Bee. She was nominated by
EARSP and AARP Local 285. Norma orchestrated the
last three years’ events from the planning stage
through purchase of equipment and prizes, to the
events’ activities on the day of the bee. This year
the thirty contestants ranged in age from fifty to
over ninety. Lyon County Department of Aging
assisted by providing registration fees and
transportation for the winner to attend the Kansas
Senior Spelling Bee in Salina. This event provides
social time and mental stimulation for those who
participate.
From
Norma’s early days on the farm near Parsons to
obtaining her doctoral degree and years teaching in
the university environment at Emporia State, Ohio
University, University of Illinois in Chicago, and
on into retirement, Norma has been dedicated to
improving the lives of those she comes in contact
with. Since her retirement Norma has held offices
in AARP Local 285, EARSP, and the Etude Club. She
is on the Girl Scout Foundation Board and is active
in Didde Catholic Campus Center, as well as having
received recognition from Newman Regional Health
Auxiliary for her volunteer work there.
When not
in the thick of some volunteer project Norma and her
beloved dog Gracie enjoy time in their home in
Emporia watching golfers traipse by her back yard.
